Company Portal App: Your Device Management Hub

The Company Portal App

The Company Portal app is your primary interface with Intune. Think of it as the "control panel" for your managed device. Every platform (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android) has a version of this app, and while the layout varies slightly, the functionality is the same.

What the Company Portal Does

The Company Portal serves four main purposes:

  1. Device compliance status — Shows if your device meets IT's security requirements
  2. App catalog — Lists company-approved apps you can install
  3. Device actions — Sync, rename, or retire your device
  4. IT support — Contact information and help resources

Checking Your Compliance Status

This is the most important feature. Here's how to use it:

  1. Open Company Portal
  2. Your device appears at the top with a status badge:
    • Green checkmark = Compliant — everything is good
    • Red exclamation mark = Not compliant — action needed
    • Yellow clock = Syncing — wait a few minutes
  3. If not compliant, tap your device to see what's wrong
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to fix each issue

Common Compliance Issues

IssueHow to Fix
OS version too oldUpdate your operating system to the required version
Encryption not enabledEnable BitLocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac) — Company Portal may offer to do this for you
Password doesn't meet requirementsChange your device password to meet IT's complexity rules
Antivirus not runningEnable Microsoft Defender or the required antivirus
Device not synced recentlyTap "Sync" in Company Portal to force a check-in
Jailbreak/root detectedRemove any jailbreak or root access — this automatically makes the device non-compliant

Installing Apps from Company Portal

Your IT team may make certain apps available through the Company Portal:

  1. Open Company Portal and tap "Apps"
  2. Browse the list of available apps (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, VPN clients, etc.)
  3. Tap an app and then tap "Install"
  4. The app downloads and installs automatically
  5. On Android, work apps install into your work profile

Note: Not all companies use the Company Portal for app distribution. Some push apps automatically without requiring you to install them manually.

The Sync Function

If something seems wrong — an app didn't install, compliance status is stuck, or policies aren't applied — the Sync button is your first troubleshooting step:

  1. Open Company Portal
  2. Tap your device
  3. Tap "Sync" (or "Check status" on some platforms)
  4. Wait 2-5 minutes for the sync to complete
  5. Check if the issue is resolved

Syncing forces your device to check in with Intune, pull down any new policies, and report its current status. It's like refreshing a webpage — sometimes that's all you need.

Device Actions

From the Company Portal, you can perform these actions on your own device:

  • Rename — Change how your device appears in IT's system (doesn't change your actual device name)
  • Remove — Unenroll your device (removes company data and access — use if you're returning the device or switching to a new one)
  • Reset — Factory reset (company-owned devices only — erases everything)

Getting IT Support

Company Portal includes IT contact information:

  1. Tap Menu > Help & Support (or the gear icon)
  2. You'll see your IT department's contact info (email, phone, website)
  3. Some companies have a "Request help" button that creates a support ticket

Pro Tip

Keep the Company Portal app on your home screen or dock. You'll need it whenever there's a compliance issue or when you need to install a company app. Burying it in a folder makes it harder to find when you need it quickly.

Next, we'll look at compliance policies — the rules that determine whether your device is "compliant" or not.
