Device Enrollment: What Happens During Setup
Device Enrollment: What to Expect
Enrollment is the process of registering your device with Intune. Think of it like checking in at a hotel — you provide your credentials, the system verifies you, and you get access to what you need.
Before You Start
Make sure you have:
- Your work email address and password — This is your Microsoft 365 account
- A Wi-Fi or cellular connection — Enrollment requires internet access
- Your device charged or plugged in — Don't let it die mid-enrollment
- About 10-15 minutes — The process is mostly automated but requires some taps
The General Enrollment Process
While the exact steps vary by platform (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android), the general flow is:
- Download the Company Portal app — From the Microsoft Store (Windows), Apple App Store (iOS/Mac), or Google Play (Android)
- Open Company Portal and sign in — Use your work email and password
- Accept the terms — You'll see what IT can and can't do on your device
- Follow the prompts — Each platform has different setup steps (we'll cover these in the next lessons)
- Wait for configuration — Intune pushes policies and apps to your device (2-5 minutes)
- Verify enrollment — Check the Company Portal app to confirm your device shows as "Compliant"
What You'll See During Enrollment
During enrollment, you'll encounter several screens. Here's what they mean:
| Screen | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| "Allow my organization to manage this device" | This grants Intune permission to apply policies | Tap Accept/Allow — this is required for enrollment |
| "Enrollment profile is being applied" | Intune is pushing settings to your device | Wait — don't close the app or turn off your device |
| "Set up a work or school account" | Your device is creating a separate profile for work | Follow the prompts — this keeps work and personal data separate |
| "Device is now managed by your organization" | Enrollment is complete | You can now access company resources |
Common Enrollment Issues
If enrollment fails, don't panic. Here are the most common issues:
- "Invalid credentials" — Double-check your work email and password. Try signing in to outlook.office.com first to confirm they work.
- "Device already enrolled" — Your device might have been enrolled before. Contact IT to re-enroll.
- "Enrollment failed — try again" — Usually a network issue. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular, then retry.
- "This device type is not supported" — IT might not have enabled enrollment for your device platform. Contact IT.
- Safari/Chrome redirects not working — On iOS, you need to use Safari for enrollment. On Android, use Chrome.
After Enrollment: The First Check-In
Once enrolled, your device will:
- Sync with Intune — Pull down all policies and app assignments (can take 5-15 minutes)
- Install required apps — Outlook, Teams, or other company apps may appear automatically
- Apply security settings — Password requirements, encryption, and other policies take effect
- Report compliance status — Your device tells Intune "I meet the requirements" or "I need attention"
You can check all of this in the Company Portal app, which we'll cover in Lesson 8.
What If I Have Multiple Devices?
Yes — you can enroll multiple devices (laptop, phone, tablet). Each device enrolls independently. Your IT team may limit the number of devices per user, typically 3-5.

In the next four lessons, we'll cover exactly what enrollment looks like on each platform — starting with Windows.
