macOS Devices in Intune: What Changes

macOS Devices in Intune

If you're using a Mac (MacBook, iMac, Mac mini), Intune enrollment works differently than Windows. macOS uses Apple's Mobile Device Management (MDM) framework, which means Intune talks to Apple's servers, which then push settings to your Mac.

How macOS Enrollment Works

On macOS, enrollment uses Apple Business Manager (ABM) or Apple School Manager (ASM) in the background. Here's what you'll experience:

  1. Download Company Portal from the Mac App Store
  2. Open Company Portal and sign in with your work email
  3. Follow the prompts to enroll your Mac
  4. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles
  5. Approve the management profile (this is required — without it, enrollment isn't complete)
  6. Wait for policies to apply (3-10 minutes)

The Management Profile

This is the key difference on macOS. After installing Company Portal, you MUST go to System Settings and approve the management profile. If you skip this step, your Mac won't be fully managed and you won't be able to access company resources.

To check if your Mac is properly enrolled:

  1. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security
  2. Scroll down to Profiles
  3. You should see a "Management Profile" listed
  4. The profile status should be "Approved"

What Stays the Same on macOS

  • Personal files and apps — Your Documents, Downloads, Photos are untouched
  • Personal Apple ID — Your iCloud, App Store purchases, and Apple services still work
  • Browser settings — Safari, Chrome, Firefox personal settings remain
  • Desktop customization — Wallpaper, Dock layout, Dark Mode — all yours
  • Time Machine backups — Local backups continue as normal

Common macOS Issues

"Profile installation failed"

This usually happens if there's an existing MDM profile. Go to System Settings > Profiles, remove the old profile, and try again.

"This Mac is already being managed"

Your Mac might have been enrolled before (e.g., previous owner or a test enrollment). Contact IT to have the old enrollment record removed.

Company Portal says "Not compliant"

Check what the compliance issue is — it's usually FileVault not being enabled or macOS being out of date. Company Portal will tell you exactly what to fix.

Apps not appearing

macOS app deployment can take longer than Windows. Open Company Portal and click "Sync" to force a check-in. Wait 5-10 minutes.

Mac-Specific Tip

On macOS, Intune enrollment creates a separate management channel. Your personal Apple ID and Intune management are completely independent. You can still use the App Store with your personal Apple ID while Intune manages security settings in the background.
