iOS Devices in Intune: What Changes
iOS Devices in Intune (iPhone & iPad)
iOS device enrollment is one of the most common Intune scenarios. Whether you're using a company-issued iPhone or your personal phone for work, here's what happens.
How iOS Enrollment Works
- Download Intune Company Portal from the App Store
- Open Company Portal and sign in with your work email
- Tap "Enroll this device"
- Follow the on-screen prompts — Safari will open to complete profile installation
- Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management
- Tap your organization's profile and tap "Install"
- Enter your device passcode and confirm installation
- Return to Company Portal to verify enrollment
What Changes on Your iPhone/iPad
| Setting | Before Intune | After Intune |
|---|---|---|
| Passcode | 4-digit or none | Must meet IT requirements (typically 6+ digits, alphanumeric in some cases) |
| Software updates | You choose when | IT may set minimum iOS version and prompt for updates |
| Work email | Manual setup | Outlook configured automatically with work account |
| App restrictions | None | IT may block certain apps (rare for BYOD) |
| Work apps | Install from App Store | Available in Company Portal for easy installation |
| Backup encryption | Optional | iTunes backups may require encryption |
The Work Container Concept
On iOS, Intune creates a logical separation between work and personal data. This is important:
- Work apps (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive) are managed by Intune
- Personal apps (Messages, Instagram, personal email) are NOT managed
- Data cannot flow from work apps to personal apps (if IT has app protection policies)
- "Open in" restrictions — You can't save a work email attachment to your personal Dropbox (if IT restricts this)
What You'll See on Your iPhone
Company Portal App
Appears on your home screen. Use it to check compliance, install work apps, and contact IT.
Management Profile in Settings
Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management — you'll see your organization's profile. This is how Intune manages your device.
Outlook and Teams Configuration
After enrollment, Outlook and Teams may be automatically configured with your work account — no manual setup needed.
"This app is managed" Notifications
When you open a work app like Outlook, you might see a banner saying "Your organization manages this app." This is normal — it means app protection policies are active.
What Stays the Same on iOS
- Personal photos and videos — Camera Roll untouched
- Personal apps — All your personal apps remain installed
- Personal Apple ID — App Store purchases, iCloud, iMessage all work normally
- Personal email accounts — Gmail, Yahoo, etc. still work
- Wallpaper and widgets — Customization is yours
- Music and media — Apple Music, Spotify, podcasts unaffected
BYOD vs. Company-Owned iPhone
If it's your personal phone (BYOD — Bring Your Own Device):
- IT can NOT see your personal apps, photos, messages, or browsing history
- IT can NOT track your location
- IT can ONLY wipe company data (selective wipe), not your personal data
- IT can ONLY manage work apps and device-level security settings (like passcode)
If it's a company-owned phone:
- IT may have full device control (supervised mode)
- IT can fully wipe the device if needed
- IT may restrict app installation and device features
- IT may pre-configure all settings before you receive it
